MAY ALL WHO READ THIS HAVE A JOYOUS NEW YEAR –

– UNLIKE 100 YEARS AGO WITH THE ASSASINATION OF ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND AND THE START OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Thank You :
To all who helped, or who supported, the “Christmas Fair” and who together raised £665 for the Church Funds.
To the anonymous couple who have provided new coffee mugs for use in the Church Worship room.
To the congregation at the Carol Service who contributed £110 to the Methodist Relief and Development Fund.

Christmas Dinner.
Johnny and his family were having Christmas Dinner at his Granny’s house. As soon as he was served he started eating.  “Johnny! Wait until we say our prayer,” said his Mother, “You know we always say a prayer before we eat when we are at home.”  Johnny replied, “But we don’t need to when we are here – Granny
knows how to cook!”.

Thanks.
Chris South has asked me to say “Thank You” to all the people who have given her material for her Tombola Stall at the Christmas Fair.

      – let a steward know if you object to the idea.

Friday Coffee Mornings.
“Thank You” to the two volunteers who have contacted Neil. However it would do no harm to have a couple more volunteers.

AND “Thank you” to all who supported the “Casserole Evening”;  and to Sue and her helpers who did all the cooking, serving and washing up.

Thanks.
I am asked to say “Thank You” to the ladies who responded to Josephine’s request to collect for the Poppy Appeal alongside those from the British Legion who were already doing their bit. So “Thank You” to Anne, Heather, Julia, Mary, Marjorie, Josie & James Moran

Recycling.
The Treasurer informs me that the Clothing Recycling Bin in our Car Park has already contributed £28.50  to our funds.

#################

17th November 2013

The Treasurer, and the Stewards she contacted, have agreed to send £50 on our behalf to MRDF for the Philippines Typhoon emergency fund. If you indicate your wish we might have a Coffee Morning, or some such Fund Raising event, for a further contribution to the fund  at a later date.

Tresurer.
At the Church Council Meeting on the 31st of October it was announced that our Treasurer, Mrs Anne May, is to relinquish the post at the end of next February. Suitable “Thanks” will be expressed nearer to the day BUT it is time – now – to start thinking who will take over this important work. Could it be you ?

Christmas Fair.
On Friday the 13th of December there is to be a Christmas Fair at Algitha Road. Details of Refreshments and Stalls will be given later BUT Chris South hopes to have her usual “Tombola Stall” and so she asks all of us to see what we can give for her to fill her table with good things, beautiful things, little things, big-ish, things, or anything !

3rd November 2013

Church Flowers.  Next year’s list will be produced in the Church Office and if you have been on the list this year you will receive a “2014 List” soon. Please contact Jayne in the Office (Tuesdays 9.00am –1.00pm) on, or before, Tuesday 12th November if you need to make changes to the 2014 Flower Rota List.

Poppies. If you can volunteer to sell “Poppies” for a shift, of no more than three hours, sometime before Remembrance Day please offer your services to Josephine. Please note that on Friday 8th at 7.30pm the “Lest We Forget” Festival of Remembrance is at the Embassy.    Tickets:  £7.50,  Over 60  £6.00,  Children  £4.50.

Harvest Festival.
The Stewards received favourable comments about the decoration of the church and about the service itself; while those to whom produce and flowers were delivered expressed their “thanks” to us all. – and “thank you” to all who gave produce, time and effort to the festival.

Royal Naval Association.
We were pleased to welcome the RNA to our service last Sunday and although our new, lower ceiling meant that the Standard Bearers had to be careful all our visitors seemed to  like our new Church.

Reminders,

Friday Coffee Mornings. If we wish to continue our Friday Coffee mornings we must have more volunteers to prepare the tables, and then to make & serve coffee – if you can help please talk to Neil, Lois or Mary and offer your services.

20th October 2013

Future Changes.

Hymns. As a result of my comments about “Modern Technology” someone did say that they were not happy with the projected hymns as they could not see the screen – hymn books are still available in the chair-back racks so do feel free to use a book if you want to.

Friday Coffee Mornings. It is good to see that numbers coming for coffee are increasing but, good as this is, it does produce problems. The Alzheimer’s Group want to be with us in the Hall but they feel that space is limited so we must find a way to prepare more tables in a more efficient way. Which leads to another important point – we must have more volunteers to prepare the tables, and then to make & serve coffee – it is unfair to rely on two or three ladies doing it week in and week out. If you can help talk to Lois or Mary.

Church Flowers.  Both Anne and Mavis are retiring from their regular monthly flower arranging duties. Duties which they have been doing tirelessly for many years and for which we thank them greatly. Next year’s list will be produced in the Church Office and if you have been on the list this year you will receive a “2014 List” later this month. We know that we are not all up to Mavis and Anne’s level of expertise as “arrangers” but a bunch or bouquet bought from a shop and placed in a vase can be just as pleasing to God and to his worshippers. Please contact Jayne in the Office (Tuesdays 9.00am –1.00pm) on, or before, Tuesday 12th November if you need to make changes to the 2014 Flower Rota List.

13th October 2013

Technology.
Last Sunday we were treated to an excellent service by Mr Graeme Thompson which contained good examples of all the usual Hymns, Prayers, Readings and Sermon; but which also introduced us to “Modern Technology” ! In my personal view the responsive prayers were much improved by having the responses on the “screen”, the sermon was greatly enriched by the use of pictures, the hymns were well sung with ones ‘head up’ (unless one was standing behind a big, tall man) rather than looking down at a book, but I was not sure of the value of projecting the readings when the readers could be heard perfectly well. Those are my views – let the Stewards know what you thought because as we are bound to have more frequent use of such technology it can only be well used if you tell us.

Harvest Festival
A big “Thank You” to all who gave produce, or time and effort, to create the display around us on this our Harvest Festival Sunday.

###################

6th October 2013

You will note that next Sunday it is our Harvest Festival.  We will again be asking for a few fresh flowers and fruits for decorating the Church on Saturday morning.  We will hope to receive tins, packets and cartons on Friday at Coffee Morning or on Saturday morning from 10 o’clock onwards for use in church,  and then for distribution to our house-bound members, those in care homes, and to Witham Lodge for their homeless and hungry people.

Questions and Answers.
Two weeks ago I asked several questions about the use of our new Church. As a result of answers received and discussions among interested parties we have tried some experiments:

1. A central aisle. The Offertory Bags were passed to the end of a line of chairs and then passed back to return along the next line which worked as far as the Offertory was concerned; but nobody liked the long lines – we will probably try a different pattern.

2. To clear the “kitchen” work surfaces we tried  putting the Hymn Books in the chair-back racks – people seemed to like this.

###################

29th September 2013

You will note that in a fortnight’s time it is our Harvest Festival.  We will again be asking for a few fresh flowers and fruits for decorating the Church but mainly we will hope to receive tins, packets and cartons with a long “best before” date for distribution to our house-bound members and those in care homes, and then the remainder will be given to the Salvation Army and Witham Lodge for their work among the homeless and hungry.

You will have noticed that our car park is increasingly being used by people who have not purchased Parking Permits. This means that, at the least, someone is stealing a place that those who did pay for a permit should be using, and, at worst, those who have paid can not find any place to park. What, legally, can we do about this ? Do you have a solution to the problem ?  The Stewards would love to hear from you – and beating up the miscreants or slashing their tyres is NOT acceptable.

22nd September 2013

Our New Church.

After our first “normal” Sunday service in the New Church certain points have been mentioned :-

Our visitors seemed pleased with what we had done.

The Hymn Number board is sometimes hidden by the Preacher – this will not be as serious when we have the ‘projected’ hymns – and where else could it go? *Answers to a Steward.

Using the ‘work surface’ for Hymn Books, Newsletters, etc interferes with the provision of coffee on the third Sunday –
where else could the Hymn Books be put?  Ditto * ‘above’.

The volumes of the Organ and Microphones need adjusting – we will get it right in time.

The eight cushions we used to have in the pews have all (except one) gone missing. If you have one please return it, or would you like to donate one to the Church?

The order of collecting the Offertory needs re-thinking as there is no obvious ‘break’ between the centre seats – or should we have a centre aisle?                 Ditto * ‘above’

And finally – what have you noticed, or think could be improved, or might want to change?    Ditto * ‘above’

The Stewards look forward to hearing your comments.

News of our Grand Rededication Week-End.

Friday. The Evening Rededication and Communion Service was well attended and was a moving experience. Partly this was because the new Church allowed the Communion to be celebrated “in the round” making us all feel involved as part of the one congregation.

Saturday. During the day more than forty-five people (and a very important dog) came to see the changes that have been made. Many of these people enjoyed a drink and a light lunch in the new Community Room. In the afternoon fifteen favourite hymns were sung with suitable gusto.

Sunday. The Morning Local Arrangements Service was well attended by many people who would later come to the Afternoon service – showing that we can still have two (or three if we include Trusthorpe) services in one day -- if that day is as special as this one was. The afternoon Communion Service almost filled the Church and was an excellent Circuit Service. The week-end’s celebrations ended in true Methodist style with Tea, Coffee and Cake served in the Community Room.

For all this we must thank the Rev Cecil Mundy for devoting so much time and effort to our one church out of the thirteen he has under his care.

8th September 2013

We await News of our Grand Rededication Week-End in next weeks Newsletter.

Until then here is a thought from Thomas à Kempis.
O Lord, grant me heavenly wisdom, that I may learn above all things to seek and to find thee, above all things to relish and to love thee, and to think of all other things as being, what indeed they are, at the disposal of thy wisdom. Grant me prudently to avoid him that flatters me, and to endure patiently him that contradicts me. Because it is a great part of wisdom not to be moved with every wind of words, nor to give ear to an ill-flattering siren; for thus we shall go on securely in the way which we have begun.

A Story to please all Yorkshire people.
A minister from Nottingham was having a holiday touring in Scotland. He looked into a “Wee Free” kirk and saw a gold telephone with this sign “Direct line to God. £2,000 p. minute.”   On his way home he stopped to look into a church in Yorkshire and there was the gold telephone with the sign – “Direct line to God.  25 pence p. minute.” He asked, “How come it is so cheap”, and was told, “Well, from here it’s only a local call.”

21st July 2013

Street Pastors.
The Skegness Fellowship of Churches have been asked to consider a Skegness  “Street Pastor” scheme as already found in Lincoln and Boston. Street Pastor  volunteers would be trained and would work on either Thursday or Friday nights from 10.30pm ‘til 4.00am once or twice a month. They would work in teams of 3 to 6 people of both men and women. The volunteers must be over 18 and they would be supported by Police, by CCTV Operators and by other groups like  “Pubwatch”. Ascension Trust would provide Training and CRB Checks; and a Uniform so that Pastors could be recognized, and asked for help, by young or vulnerable or possibly drunken revellers. If the Street work is not for you there is the possibility of being part of the in-door “Prayer Team” offering support for those on the street. This call for volunteers is not just for members of the congregation – sons, daughters or grand children could do the job equally well.
If you want to know more, or to volunteer, talk to Neil Baxter.

World Vision.
We have received a letter from World Vision which tells of serious flooding in the area of Kenya where Omondi Kevin ( our sponsored child ) lives. This year they have experienced the heaviest rain recorded for 55 years. Thankfully Omondi and his family are unaffected as their village is not one of the low-lying ones where whole families have had to be evacuated to temporary (we hope) camps. World Vision workers are busy distributing blankets, mosquito nets, water filters, hygiene kits and cooking equipment in the camps. On our behalf  Heather Gray is including, with her usual monthly donation, an extra amount for the emergency fund.

We have received the following communication from the  HMS Gambia Association :
“Dear Jayne Hopps, I wish to thank your members for the welcome you gave us last Sunday and to say we all enjoyed attending the service. Many Thanks aye John Andrews”.

Algitha Road Mid-morning Prayers.
Weekly morning prayers will now be undertaken each
Monday morning at 11.00am within the church premises.
These usually last about 30 minutes and this is an ideal opportunity for us all to come together to bring our concerns to the Lord.
I fervently believe that we cannot underestimate the power of prayer and therefore invite you to join us to seek answers to our prayers. Neil Baxter.

Unanswered Prayer.
The un-named preacher’s 5 year-old daughter noticed that her father always paused and bowed his head before starting his sermon. One day, she asked him why. “Well,” he began, proud that his daughter was so observant, “I’m asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon.”      “How come He doesn’t answer?” she asked.

21st April 2013

The Circuit “Open Meeting” held at Alford on Tuesday the 9th agreed that, in view of the projected financial problems, the Circuit would, in future, have to be led by one full-time Minister with the help of an Administrative Assistant. Even with the assistant doing much of the administrative paper-work there will still be a very heavy work load on the Minister’s shoulders. He/she will need all the help we can give, as well as our understanding and acceptance of any necessary changes to our well-worn routines.
This change will come into effect from 1st September 2014.

Cushions.
Did you use a cushion in the Church pews ?
Did you bring your own cushion to sit on ?
Would you like it back ?
If the answer to each of these questions is “Yes” then speak

Please bring what you can, when you can.

Advice from Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471).
“Grant me, O Lord, to know that which is worth knowing, to love that which is worth loving, to praise that which pleaseth Thee most, to esteem that highly which is to Thee precious, to abhor that which in Thy sight is filthy and unclean. Suffer me not to judge according to the sight of the outward eyes, nor to give sentence according to the hearing of the ears of ignorant men; but with a true judgement  to discern between things visible and spiritual, and above all to be ever searching after the good pleasure of Thy will.”

Safeguarding.
On Saturday the 23rd  Algitha Road’s Safeguarding Steward, Neil Baxter, took members of the Pastoral Team to Alford for a Safeguarding Workshop for those involved with Pastoral Visiting. The District Safeguarding Officer, Howard Smedley, produced an informative and interesting morning’s programme of learning and
discussion.

From the Whetstone Baptist Church Magazine :
The Church received a letter from a couple of visitors who were lapsed Christians. In the letter they wrote “that in visiting the church we were reminded of why we used to call ourselves Christian. Our visit led us to begin to reconsider our beliefs. Something in the preaching, something in the reality of the worship, something in the warm and genuine nature of the church at worship touched us, and encouraged us to reconnect with our God and with our faith.”
Would Algitha Road get such a letter ?

Saturday saw over 30 people enjoy an excellent “Pie & Pea Supper”, followed by songs from the twenties.  Thank you to Sue and Neil for organizing the food and, together with Anne and Lois, working so hard in the kitchen. Thanks also go to those who served the food. Our thanks go to Julia and Eric for the singing and the music. And thank you for supporting the event which raised £159.50 while you were all having a wonderful evening. Finally a belated “Happy Birthday “to Tony. Hope the cake tasted as nice as it looked!!

10th February 2013

At the time of Printing this Newsletter (Tuesday 5th.) we have not had the Church Council Meeting (on the 6th) nor the “Pie, Peas and Chips” Supper (on the 9th). Assuming that I am given information about these two events, before next Tuesday, they will be reported in next week’s Newsletter.

More Gems from the Nun’s Exam Paper.
1. Moses led the jews to the red sea where they made unleavened bread which is bread without any ingredients.
2.  Solomon, one of david’s sons, had 300 wives and 700 porcupines.
3. The seventh commandment is thou shalt not admit adultery.

Thought for the day :
We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours, but they all have to live in the same box.

Bibles. Don’t forget to let Neil have any surplus Bibles you may have for Pam Ellis to give for use in Prison.

An Old Scottish Prayer.
Grant, O God, that we may always be right,
for thou knowest we will never change our minds.

A Little Knowledge …
A Nun marking RE Papers in a Catholic School came across these:
1. Lot’s wife was a pillar of salt during the day, but a ball of fire during the night.
2. The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple.
3. The greatest miracle in the Bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he obeyed him.
4. The epistles were the wives of the apostles.
5. Christians have only one spouse. This is called monotony.

27th January 2013

On Friday, 18th,  some of the Algitha Road Stewards met with the architect, Mr J. Lord of R J Design, to discuss his plans for the reorganization of the Church Building. The stewards were very pleased with his plans but suggested two minor changes to which he readily agreed. He will re-draw the amended plans and send them to be accepted by the District. After that, accurate costings can be submitted, the possibilities of grant aid investigated, and then the first of the work can be started.

Post Christmas “Thank Yous” – My final “thank you” is to all those who used the Christmas Card Board in the Hall and who, by doing so, gave £70 to Action for Children. And my apologies to Julia for having forgotten to put this in the Newsletter before now.

20th January 2013

Neil Baxter was asked by Pam Ellis if he had any old surplus Bibles which could be used in a Suffolk Prison. He gave her what he had; but it is possible that some of us may have cleared out relatives houses and are reluctant to throw old Bibles on the tip. If anyone has any old surplus Bibles this seems to be a good outlet, and Neil will happily collect any and pass them on.   Thanks.

Words of wisdom :
Drive carefully ….. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

13th January 2013

We are sad to announce that the Revd Nigel has a broken bone in his foot and will be unable to work for some time. We pray for a rapid recovery.

A Morning Prayer.
So far today, I’ve done all right and I’m feeling really good about myself.
I haven’t gossiped and I haven’t lost my temper. I haven’t been grumpy, greedy, selfish or overindulgent, and I haven’t harmed anyone.
I believe I’ve done everything exactly the way You would want me to do, and I’m really proud of that God!
But, Lord, in a few more minutes I’m going to get out of bed, and knowing me the way I do, from then on I’m probably going to need a great deal of Your help.
Thank you God, and stay with me as I get up and face the day ahead.                               Amen.
